Starmer Under Pressure to Resign as Labour MPs Call for Exit Timeline
Labour lawmakers and ministers are reportedly urging Keir Starmer to disclose any plans for resignation, increasing the pressure on him.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer encountered increasing pressure on Tuesday, as senior ministers and numerous Labour lawmakers allegedly called on him to clarify his intentions regarding his tenure in office.
Starmer was scheduled to meet with cabinet colleagues following a surge of resignations from ministerial aides and growing demands within the governing Labour Party for him to resign.
The pressure came after Labor’s disappointing results in last week’s local elections, which have been broadly characterized as one of the party’s most significant electoral failures in recent times.
Reports from British media indicate that senior cabinet ministers, such as Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, have advised Starmer to provide a timeline for his departure.
Approximately 80 Labour lawmakers from various factions within the party have reportedly supported calls for Starmer to reveal an exit plan, a decision that could initiate a leadership contest.
Senior minister Darren Jones stated that Starmer was in the process of consulting colleagues prior to making a decision on his next steps.
“He is engaging with his colleagues, both by listening and conversing with them.” “I can’t anticipate any decision he might make or not make,” Jones told Times Radio.
Starmer had previously sought to stabilize his leadership by vowing to govern with increased urgency and confront Britain’s economic and social issues more assertively.
However, demands for his resignation grew stronger soon after, increasing political uncertainty and leading to higher government borrowing costs.
On Monday, Starmer cautioned that the nation would not overlook Labour’s missteps if the party were to engage in yet another leadership struggle, just under two years after regaining power with a significant parliamentary majority.
Just before Wednesday’s State Opening of Parliament, King Charles III is expected to unveil the government’s legislative agenda amidst the political turmoil.
Starmer ascended to the position of Britain’s fourth prime minister in five years, a development that came after a lengthy phase of political instability triggered by the nation’s decision to exit the European Union.
