Byron Allen has just invested $120 million to rejuvenate BuzzFeed, and his strategy is more ambitious than anyone anticipated
Media mogul Byron Allen has stepped in to save a digital media icon on the brink of collapse, acquiring a majority stake in BuzzFeed for $120 million and assuming the roles of chairman and CEO.
Allen Family Digital, associated with Allen’s family office, is set to acquire 40 million shares at a price of $3 per share, resulting in ownership of roughly 52% of the company’s outstanding shares. The agreement, anticipated to finalize by the end of May, is arranged with an initial payment of $20 million in cash and a $100 million promissory note maturing in five years at an annual interest rate of 5%.
The acquisition comes at a pivotal time for the two-decade-old company. In 2025, BuzzFeed reported a net loss of $57.3 million and recognized that it did not have enough resources to fulfill its cash obligations for the upcoming year. The company’s challenges have developed over several years: following its public debut in 2021, BuzzFeed closed its Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom in 2023, experienced several rounds of layoffs, and sold Complex Networks in 2024. Revenues for the full year 2025 totaled $185.3 million, reflecting a decline of 2.4% compared to the previous year, while advertising revenue decreased by nearly 3%.
Allen, the architect behind Allen Media Group’s transformation into a broadcast powerhouse with ownership of 13 network affiliates and 10 HD television networks, perceives potential where others recognize devastation.
“BuzzFeed and HuffPost have emerged as two iconic global digital media brands, boasting significant audience reach and considerable cultural significance,” he stated. “At this time, leveraging the capabilities of AI, BuzzFeed is officially pursuing YouTube to establish itself as a leading free video streaming service.”
After two decades as CEO, founder Jonah Peretti will transition to lead a newly established division called “BuzzFeed AI.” “After 20 years as CEO of BuzzFeed, I’m eager to shift my attention to a more hands-on role in developing products and technology made possible by recent advancements in AI,” Peretti stated. “I firmly believe that AI will fundamentally reshape the media industry and enable creative individuals to innovate in unprecedented ways.”
Plans involve the launch of BuzzFeed Studios, which will focus on micro-dramas, animation, and feature films, as well as the separation of the food brand Tasty into an independent entity.
