Putin Declares That the Russia-Ukraine Conflict Is ‘Approaching Its Conclusion’
Putin indicates a potential conclusion to the Ukraine conflict while supporting a ceasefire and renewed discussions regarding Europe’s future security framework.
On Saturday, Vladimir Putin expressed his belief that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is approaching its conclusion, signaling one of his most definitive indications that Moscow may be receptive to a wider resolution following over four years of hostilities.
“I believe that the issue is nearing its conclusion,” Putin stated to reporters at the Kremlin after Russia’s Victory Day festivities.
The president of Russia expressed his openness to discussing new security arrangements for Europe, identifying former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as his preferred partner for negotiations.
Putin’s comments followed shortly after his Victory Day address in Moscow’s Red Square, where he justified Russia’s war in Ukraine and blamed NATO for exacerbating the situation.
During Russia’s annual celebration commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, Putin characterized Ukraine as a “aggressive force” backed by the NATO alliance.
Compared to previous years, the parade in Red Square significantly reduced its scale, omitting tanks, ballistic missiles, and heavy military equipment. Instead, large screens displayed images of Russian military equipment deployed on the battlefield in Ukraine.
In February 2022, Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow refers to as a “special military operation.” This action has led to the most significant confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cold War.
Putin held Western leaders responsible for the conflict, alleging that they violated commitments made following the fall of the Berlin Wall by extending NATO eastward and trying to bring Ukraine closer to the European Union.
Although there have been numerous commitments to persist in the struggle until Russia fulfills all its goals, Putin’s recent statements indicate that Moscow might now be contemplating a potential political resolution to the conflict.
The conflict has resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives, caused extensive destruction across significant areas of Ukraine, and has put immense pressure on the relationship between Russia and Europe.
Russian forces presently hold control over almost one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, though their progress on the battlefield has decelerated recently.
In the meantime, a ceasefire declared by Donald Trump from Saturday to Monday seemed to be maintained, as both Moscow and Kyiv consented to the exchange of 1,000 prisoners.
“I would prefer for it to come to an end.” Trump stated in Washington, “The Russia-Ukraine conflict is the worst event since World War Two in terms of loss of life.”
“According to the report, there were no reports of ceasefire violations from either Moscow or Kyiv.”
Putin indicated that a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy might take place, but only following the establishment of a lasting peace agreement.
European leaders have consistently supported Ukraine both militarily and financially, whereas Russia has charged Western governments with extending the conflict through their provision of weapons and intelligence collaboration.
