A fireworks factory explosion in China claims 26 lives and injures 61

A tragic explosion at the Huasheng Fireworks plant in Liuyang has resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals and injuries to 61 others, as confirmed by authorities following rescue efforts.

A devastating explosion at a fireworks factory in central China has resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals and left 61 others injured, as reported by state media.

On Monday afternoon, a blast occurred at the Huasheng Fireworks plant in Liuyang, prompting authorities to evacuate residents within a 3km radius.

The rescue operations have concluded. Authorities dispatched over 1,500 emergency responders, aided by dogs, drones, and robots. Seven individuals trapped beneath debris have been successfully rescued.

The police have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. According to state media, “control measures” have been implemented regarding the staff responsible for the company, which may include suspensions or increased oversight to ensure safety protocols are followed in light of the explosion.

Officials indicated that the presence of two gunpowder warehouses at the location presented a significant hazard during the rescue operations. Teams additionally humidified the area to mitigate the risk of secondary accidents during the rescue.

The explosion resulted in extensive destruction. China Central Television’s televised report indicated that windows in nearby residential buildings shattered.

The injured victims range in age from their 20s to their 60s. Several individuals sustained bone injuries due to being hit by airborne debris.

Xi Jinping has urged comprehensive efforts to locate the missing and provide care for the injured. He also launched an investigation to hold accountable those responsible.

Local authorities have stated that they are actively monitoring the quality of both water and air in the area. Environmental indicators continue to show normal levels.

Residents detailed the extent of the destruction. A resident located approximately 1km from the factory reported that debris had obstructed the roads.

“The glass windows in our homes were shattered, the aluminum window frames were deformed, and even the stainless-steel doors were twisted out of shape,” she stated.

One more resident expressed that she had departed from the village due to fear.

Liuyang is recognized for its fireworks manufacturing and it is often referred to as the largest producer of fireworks in the world.

Explosions at fireworks factories and shops occur frequently in China and often result in fatalities. In February, a tragic incident at a fireworks store in Hubei Province resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals.
