Samsung Appoints New Chief for TV Division Amid Growing Competition from Chinese Rivals
Samsung Electronics has appointed a new head for its TV division for the first time in more than two years, responding to increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers.
Samsung Electronics, the leading TV manufacturer globally, has appointed a new head of television operations for the first time in over two years. Samsung views this change as a strategic response to the increasing competition posed by Chinese brands both domestically and internationally.
On Monday, Samsung announced the appointment of Lee Won-jin, who previously led its global marketing office, as the new head of its visual display business. He takes over from Yong Seok-woo, who will now assume the role of adviser to the company.
The company has not revealed the rationale behind the leadership change, which occurs outside of its customary annual management reshuffle cycle usually conducted in December.
A Samsung Electronics representative informed Reuters that the adjustment aims to revitalize the division’s strategy in response to increasing competitive pressures in the global TV market.
The official stated, “The new leader is anticipated to provide a fresh perspective and implement the necessary changes for the TV business, which is encountering increasing market competition.”
The recent changes in leadership occur amidst the growing competition in the global home entertainment industry. In March, TCL Electronics from China and Sony from Japan entered into binding agreements to form a strategic partnership in the home entertainment sector, intensifying competition for established companies such as Samsung.
Reports from the Nikkei newspaper have indicated that Samsung may be contemplating the discontinuation of its home appliance and TV sales in China within the year, as local Chinese manufacturers increasingly capture market share by offering lower prices than foreign competitors.
Last month, Samsung reported that its TV division experienced a decline in profit during the first quarter, attributing the loss to weak demand and increasing raw material costs.
Lee Won-jin, the newly appointed head of the Visual Display Business, has a background that includes a tenure at Google prior to joining Samsung in 2014. He brings valuable experience in global marketing and digital strategy as the company aims to reposition its TV business in a highly competitive market.
