Mark Zuckerberg Reveals the True Reason for Meta Layoffs and Does Not Exclude Further Job Cuts
Mark Zuckerberg is openly discussing the reasons behind the job losses at Meta, and he is not ruling out the possibility of further reductions.
In a recent internal meeting, Zuckerberg stated that the company’s latest layoffs are a result of changing priorities at Meta. Approximately 10% of the workforce, totaling around 8,000 employees, will be reduced as the company intensifies its focus on artificial intelligence and infrastructure.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Zuckerberg explained it clearly and straightforwardly. “We have two cost centers in the company,” he said, pointing to compute power such as GPUs and chips, along with data centers. “There are aspects related to compute and infrastructure, as well as those that are more people-oriented. If we choose to invest more in one area to better serve our community, it inevitably means we have less capital available to allocate to the other.”
“This indicates that we must reduce the size of the company to some extent,” he added.
However, that is not the sole pressure point. Zuckerberg attributed the slowdown to wider economic pressures associated with the U.S. war in Iran, which have affected advertising expenditures and overall revenue streams.
Simultaneously, he emphasized that AI is already transforming the way work is conducted within Meta.
“If a team that once required 50 or 100 people now only needs 10, having the larger group can actually hinder progress moving forward.” “I believe we should address that,” Zuckerberg stated.
That framing indicates a larger issue beyond a singular layoff. A structural shift is indicated, with a reduced need for employees as AI assumes a greater number of functions.
The current situation within the company is affecting morale significantly. According to data from Blind, there has been a notable increase in negative sentiment towards Meta since 2024, indicating rising concerns among employees as they observe the company’s swift shift in direction.
Zuckerberg did not make a clear announcement regarding additional layoffs, yet he also did not dismiss the possibility. As AI investments continue to increase, the message resonated strongly with employees. The reset might not be complete.
