Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has raised concerns about the United States’ commitment to NATO, cautioning that Europe is confronted with its “biggest, most important question” regarding Washington’s loyalty in the event of a Russian attack, as reported by the Financial Times.
Tusk’s comments highlight an increasing discomfort throughout Europe regarding the direction of US foreign policy and the ambiguity surrounding former President Donald Trump’s position on allies. He emphasized that Poland requires assurance that all NATO members will fulfill their defense commitments without delay.
Prior to an informal European Union summit in Cyprus, Tusk called on the bloc to transform into a “real alliance” that can defend the continent more effectively. During the meeting, EU leaders are anticipated to address the Middle East conflict, energy security, and the bloc’s long-term budget.
Tusk highlighted the EU’s mutual defense clause, Article 42.7, indicating that it should be reevaluated as Europe enhances its security framework. His remarks arise in the context of changing political dynamics in the region and worries regarding internal divisions, which could undermine the EU’s ability to respond effectively to security threats and necessitate a more cohesive approach to defense among member states.
He emphasized the need for real military abilities, pointing out that better teamwork, easier movement of troops between countries, and stronger defense tools are urgent issues we need to address now, not later.
Tusk emphasized that his main focus is to “reintegrate Europe” by establishing a unified defense strategy, urging for collaborative actions to safeguard the continent’s eastern borders from potential threats.
