Eddie Murphy Receives AFI Lifetime Achievement Award as Hollywood Celebrates His Legacy

Eddie Murphy is honored with the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award as Hollywood luminaries celebrate his illustrious career in a heartfelt, star-studded ceremony.

As he gazes at the family, collaborators, and peers who have influenced his extensive journey, the 65-year-old actor and comedian contemplates the significance of the occasion while getting ready to receive one of the industry’s most prestigious awards.

“Being surrounded by my family, my children, my wonderful wife, and all the various colleagues I’ve worked with truly fills me with joy,” Murphy expresses. “This is a significant moment. I long for you all to experience what I am experiencing, to witness what I am witnessing. I nearly shed a tear. I plan to slip backstage and let my tears flow.

An extended standing ovation greets Murphy as he approaches the stage, trailing him throughout the ballroom. As he navigates the crowd, he encounters notable industry figures such as Spike Lee, Martin Lawrence, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Arsenio Hall, and Judge Reinhold, all gathered to honor his legacy.

The tribute event showcases appearances by various entertainers, such as Bill Burr, Kevin Hart, Eva Longoria, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Kenan Thompson. The ceremony is subsequently revealed to be broadcast as a Netflix special on May 31.

The evening features a showcase of Murphy’s career, which spans nearly five decades, with visuals that highlight his evolution from a teenage stand-up performer to a global box office star. His contributions to projects like Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, and Shrek are recognized as pivotal moments in the evolution of modern comedy and film.

In his presentation of the award, Spike Lee commends Murphy’s impact on culture, stating, “Eddie made us laugh and made our nation feel better.” He notes that each of them, through their unique creative expressions, contributed to the advancement of culture while remaining authentic to their identities, which has inspired countless artists and comedians to embrace their individuality and creativity.

Chris Rock, one of the speakers, highlights Murphy’s influence on the industry with a succinct yet impactful statement: “There is no us without you.”

Martin Lawrence recounts a personal story from the beginning of his career, remembering a time when Murphy declined a request for a photo. He humorously remarks that the circumstances have evolved, pointing out that their families are now linked by marriage. “Now I can obtain all the pictures I desire,” he states. “As we are related by marriage.”

The evening features a musical tribute by Jennifer Hudson, who will perform selections from Dreamgirls accompanied by a live band under the direction of Rickey Minor.

The gala generates over $2.5 million for AFI’s nonprofit education programs and also recognizes cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw with the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal.
