Tiger Woods Takes a Break to Pursue Treatment Following DUI Arrest
Tiger Woods is breaking golf to prioritize his health after a car crash and DUI arrest.
Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods has declared his decision to step back from golf to prioritize his health after his arrest following a car crash in Florida.
A 50-year-old golfer was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence following an incident last Friday where his vehicle struck a truck and overturned. He is also charged with property damage and failing to comply with a lawful test. Woods has subsequently submitted a written plea of not guilty via his legal representatives.
A police report indicates that officers discovered two hydrocodone pills—an opioid utilized for severe pain—in his possession. Authorities also observed that Woods seemed “lethargic and slow,” was sweating profusely, and had “extremely dilated” pupils after the crash.
For the first time publicly addressing the incident, Woods stated that he is taking time away to focus on his well-being. He stated, “I am aware of and comprehend the gravity of the circumstances I am currently facing.” I will be taking some time off to prioritize my health and pursue treatment. This is essential for me to focus on my well-being and strive for enduring recovery.
He expressed his commitment to dedicating the necessary time to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused state, both personally and professionally. I am grateful for your understanding and support, and I kindly request privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself during this time.
The announcement raises uncertainty regarding his involvement in forthcoming events, including The Masters, where he had kept the possibility of competing open despite his infrequent appearances in recent years. Woods has not participated in a major tournament since he missed the cut at The Open Championship in July 2024. He was anticipated to participate in events related to the Masters, such as the unveiling of a revamped public golf course on Sunday and the champion’s dinner hosted by Rory McIlroy on Tuesday evening.
Officials from Augusta National Golf Club conveyed their support for Woods, emphasizing that even in his absence, his influence will remain significant. The PGA Tour expressed its support, characterizing Woods as an iconic figure whose impact reaches far beyond the realm of golf.
The most recent event contributes to a succession of personal and professional hurdles that Woods has encountered throughout the years. In 2017, he was sentenced to a year of probation after admitting to reckless driving, and a car crash in 2021 resulted in severe injuries that necessitated multiple surgeries.
Despite these challenges, Woods has recently made a comeback to competitive play, participating in the TGL indoor golf league after undergoing additional medical procedures, including back surgery and treatment for an Achilles tendon injury.
As he steps away once more, Woods expressed his dedication to taking the necessary time for a complete recovery while requesting privacy for himself and his family.
