Iran has stated that it will target US bases in the region if there is an attack from the US

The foreign minister of Iran stated on Saturday that the country will target U.S. bases in the Middle East if U.S. forces, which have gathered in the region, launch an attack. He emphasized that this action should not be interpreted as an assault on the nations hosting these bases.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi gave an interview to Qatari Al Jazeera TV the day after Tehran and Washington committed to ongoing indirect nuclear talks, following what both parties characterized as constructive discussions on Friday in Oman.

Araqchi indicated that a date for the next round of negotiations has not been established, whereas U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned that they might occur early next week. “Araqchi stated that both we and Washington believe it should take place soon.”

Trump has issued a warning to Iran following a U.S. naval buildup in the area, insisting that it cease uranium enrichment, which could lead to nuclear weapons, along with halting ballistic missile development and support for militant groups throughout the region. Tehran has consistently refuted any intention to weaponize nuclear fuel production.

Although both parties have expressed a willingness to renew diplomatic efforts regarding Tehran’s enduring nuclear conflict with the West, Araqchi hesitated to expand the discussions.

“Engaging in dialogue necessitates avoiding threats and coercion.” “Tehran only addresses its nuclear issue… We do not engage in discussions on any other matters with the U.S.,” he stated.

In June, the U.S. participated in the bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities, aligning with the concluding phases of a 12-day Israeli bombing campaign. Tehran has announced that it has ceased uranium enrichment activity.

The response at that time involved a missile strike on a U.S. base in Qatar, which upholds positive relations with both Tehran and Washington.

Araqchi stated that if there were to be a new U.S. attack, the consequences could be comparable.

“Attacking American soil is not feasible; however, we will focus on their bases in the region,” he stated.

“We will refrain from attacking neighboring countries; instead, our focus will be on U.S. bases located within them.” The distinction between the two is significant.

Iran asserts its desire for acknowledgment of its right to enrich uranium, stating that including its missile program in negotiations would expose it to potential Israeli attacks.
