Trump claims that Zelensky, not Putin, is impeding a possible peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine

Trump claims that Putin is ready to wrap up his nearly four-year invasion of Ukraine, whereas Zelensky has shown more reluctance to bring the conflict to a close.

US President Donald Trump informed Reuters that it is Ukraine, rather than Russia, that is obstructing a possible peace agreement, countering the assertions of European allies who claim that Moscow is reluctant to conclude its conflict.

During an exclusive interview in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to end his nearly four-year invasion of Ukraine, whereas Kyiv has shown more reluctance.

“I believe he’s prepared to negotiate,” Trump remarked regarding the Russian president. “I believe Ukraine is not as prepared to reach an agreement.”

When questioned about the lack of resolution in US-led negotiations regarding Europe’s largest land conflict since World War Two, Trump responded succinctly:

“Zelensky.”

Trump’s comments indicated a resurgence of irritation towards the Ukrainian leader. The relationship between the two presidents has been tumultuous, yet their interactions seem to have become more positive during Trump’s first year back in office.

At times, Trump has shown a greater willingness to take Putin’s assurances at face value compared to some US allies, which has frustrated Kyiv, European capitals, and even US lawmakers, including Republicans.

Following numerous attempts and setbacks, discussions led by the US have recently centered on security assurances for a post-war Ukraine, aimed at preventing any future Russian invasions after a possible peace agreement. Negotiators have urged Kyiv to contemplate relinquishing its eastern Donbas region as a component of any agreement.

Trump informed Reuters that he was unaware of a possible upcoming trip to Moscow by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as reported earlier by Bloomberg.

When asked about a potential meeting with Zelenskiy at the World Economic Forum in Davos next week, Trump indicated that he would be willing to meet if the Ukrainian president is present.

“I would – if he’s present,” Trump stated. “I will be present.”

When asked about Zelenskiy’s reluctance to engage in negotiations, Trump refrained from providing further details, stating:

“I believe he’s, you know, struggling to reach that point.”

Zelenskiy has firmly dismissed any notion of territorial concessions to Moscow, asserting that according to Ukraine’s constitution, the nation is not permitted to relinquish any land.
