Iran Indicates Rapid Trials and Executions as Protest Fatalities Surpass 2,500 In light of Trump’s caution
Iranian authorities are set to conduct swift trials and executions for detained protesters during a severe crackdown, disregarding President Trump’s cautions.
On Wednesday, Iran’s judiciary indicated that swift trials and executions are set for individuals arrested during the nationwide protests, in defiance of warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei expressed his views as activists cautioned that the executions of detainees might take place in the near future. According to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, a violent crackdown by security forces has resulted in the deaths of at least 2,571 individuals. The toll marks the highest for protests in Iran in decades, evoking memories of the unrest that accompanied the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Trump has consistently cautioned that the United States might resort to military action in response to the killing of peaceful protesters, following a June 12-day conflict during which Israel targeted Iranian nuclear sites with bombings.
At the same time, Iran made arrangements for the large funeral of 100 security force members who lost their lives during the demonstrations. Despite the apparent withdrawal of anti-riot police and paramilitary Revolutionary Guard forces to their barracks, a sense of fear still lingers among the people in the streets.
“We are extremely scared due to the sounds of gunfire and the protests,” expressed a mother of two while shopping for fruits and vegetables on Wednesday. “Reports indicate that numerous individuals have lost their lives and many others have sustained injuries.” Peace has been restored, yet schools remain closed, and I feel apprehensive about sending my children back to school.
Ahmadreza Tavakoli, 36, shared with The Associated Press his astonishment at the authorities’ use of firearms during a protest he witnessed in Tehran. “Individuals gathered to voice their opinions and demonstrate, but it swiftly escalated into a battleground,” he stated. “The populace lacks firearms. “Only the security forces possess firearms.”
Mohseni-Ejei expressed this in a video posted by Iranian state television online. “If we wish to accomplish a task, we ought to do it immediately.” If we wish to accomplish something, we must act swiftly. If it gets delayed, whether by two months or three months, it loses its impact. “If we want to accomplish something, we must act quickly.”
His remarks directly confront Trump, who stated in a CBS interview on Tuesday, “We will take very strong action.” Should they proceed with such actions, we will respond with significant measures. We wish to prevent the situation in Iran from occurring. It’s one thing to hold protests, but when they escalate to the point of killing thousands, and now there’s talk of hanging — we’ll see how that unfolds for them. It’s not going to work out well.
Activists have indicated that Starlink is providing complimentary service in Iran, assisting individuals in circumventing an internet shutdown initiated by the government on January 8. On Tuesday, Iran reinstated certain international mobile calls, although calls originating from abroad continue to be restricted.
“We can confirm that the free subscription for Starlink terminals is fully operational,” stated Mehdi Yahyanejad, an activist from Los Angeles who assisted in the delivery of the units. “We conducted tests with a newly activated Starlink terminal within Iran.” Starlink has yet to provide a response to the report.
Reports indicate that security forces conducted searches for Starlink dishes, raiding apartment buildings in northern Tehran. While satellite television dishes remain illegal, the enforcement of this law has become considerably more lenient in recent years.
The Human Rights Activists News Agency reported that 2,403 of the deceased were protesters, 147 were affiliated with the government, 12 were children, and nine were civilians not involved in the protests. Over 18,100 individuals have been apprehended.
Disruptions in communication have hindered the ability to independently verify the death toll and the protests.
