UN Supports ECOWAS and National Authorities, Denounces Benin Coup Attempt

The UN supports ECOWAS and local authorities and urges respect for the law in response to the Benin coup.

ECOWAS countries have intervened to support the Beninese armed forces in response to the latest coup attempt in Benin over the weekend. Concern over the instability has also been expressed by the UN Secretary-General’s office.

The attempt to unlawfully take control of Benin has deeply alarmed the Secretary-General. “Unequivocally condemns any attempt to undermine democratic governance in Benin, which could also further threaten the stability of the region, calling for full respect for the rule of law and the Constitution,” stated UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Tuesday.

“Our Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, is actively engaging with national authorities and other stakeholders, as well as regional and international partners, to support efforts to restore peace and stability in Benin,” he continued.

Additionally, Dujarric said, “He reiterated our dedication to assisting regional and national institutions in preserving constitutional order, both domestically and internationally. He is striving toward this goal as well.
