The Rwanda-DR Congo peace agreement is approved by the Senate

Senate members voted in favor of the law on August 4 that makes the peace agreement between Rwanda and DR Congo official. The agreement was signed on June 27.

The agreement, negotiated by the US and approved by both the Cabinet and the lower house, includes a plan to neutralize the FDLR, a militia formed by former Genocide perpetrators who wanted to return to power after the genocide against the Tutsi in 1994, and lift Rwanda’s defensive measures as a result.

During Monday’s Plenary Session of the Senate, Olivier Nduhungirehe, who is Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said again that Rwanda was committed to putting the deal into action.

The Senators heard from Nduhungirehe that they wanted the deal to be fully carried out with political will and good faith.

“We are dedicated to putting it into action because it is the only way to achieve lasting peace, promote economic growth, and improve people’s health in the Great Lakes Region.” We understand that peace, cooperation, and economic integration in the area are good for everyone.
