Poland will sign a $4 billion loan guarantee from the US to further military modernization
Poland intends to agree to a $4 billion loan guarantee from the US to assist in financing the modernization of its military.
Poland’s defense minister said Thursday that Poland is ready to sign a $4 billion loan guarantee arrangement with the United States to help with its ongoing military modernization initiatives.
The action is a component of Warsaw’s larger plan to fortify its military in the face of rising regional tensions and Russia’s ongoing conflict in neighboring Ukraine. Poland is strategically important on NATO’s eastern flank, which will be strengthened with the help of the extra funding.
More than $11 billion in loans and loan guarantees have been provided by the US to Poland since 2022, enabling the country to purchase cutting-edge weapons such as Apache attack helicopters, HIMARS rocket systems, and Patriot air defense systems.
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Poland has become NATO’s largest defense spender in terms of GDP, driven by security concerns. The nation intends to devote 4.7% of its GDP to defense in 2025, with a goal of raising that percentage to 5% by 2026.
As both countries work to combat the escalating security challenges in Eastern Europe, the impending loan guarantee highlights the strengthening defense cooperation between Washington and Warsaw.
