Ukraine Plans to Request $120 Billion for Defense in 2026, Minister States

Ukraine would require at least $120 billion for defense, with half coming from foreign partners, according to Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal.

As Ukraine continues to fight back against Russia’s full-scale invasion, Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal said Tuesday that the country will need at least $120 billion in defense spending in the upcoming year.

Shmyhal added that Kyiv is actively working with foreign partners to obtain about half of the required cash from overseas in a message that was shared on the Telegram messaging app.

He stated that “Ukraine seeks $60 billion in funding from partners” and that “negotiations are ongoing with NATO and EU members.”

Officials said the remaining funds would have to come from loans, domestic income, or other foreign assistance.

It is anticipated that the funds will address a variety of defense requirements, such as the acquisition of weapons, ammunition, drone manufacturing, cyber defense infrastructure, and human support. Ukrainian officials have emphasized that ongoing military and financial support is still essential to their long-term resilience as the conflict enters its third year.
