AfDB Authorizes €100 Million Loan to Support Moroccan Youth and Women in Agriculture
A €100 million loan has been authorized by the AfDB to help Morocco’s youth and women-led initiatives for sustainable agriculture and food security.
A loan of €100 million ($116.4 million) has been authorized by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to promote sustainable agriculture in Morocco, with a particular emphasis on empowering women and youth.
The funding, which was made public on Monday, intends to increase the nation’s food security while assisting small-scale farmers in becoming more climate change resilient. The project is in line with larger initiatives to develop inclusive and climate-smart agricultural systems throughout Africa, the bank said in a statement.
Achraf Tarsim, the head of the AfDB’s Morocco office, stated, “Our priority is women who have the ambition to pursue and succeed in agriculture.” The program will offer significant assistance to farming businesses run by women and young people, which the bank believes are essential to Morocco’s long-term development objectives.
AfDB has invested €15 billion ($17.46 billion) in Morocco over the past 50 years in important areas like transportation, energy, water, agriculture, social protection, governance, and finance. This funding is a part of the AfDB’s larger commitment to Morocco.
The most recent loan demonstrates the AfDB’s increasing focus on inclusive development and environmental sustainability, which are fundamental to its agriculture strategy. Additionally, it addresses growing worries about climate change and how it affects rural livelihoods.
Given Morocco’s ongoing struggles with food and water security, especially in its drought-prone areas, the bank’s assistance is anticipated to give the agricultural sector a much-needed boost in innovation, productivity, and long-term resilience.
