Netflix Boss Stands Firm on Decision to Cancel Acclaimed Show The Residence Despite Emmy Nominations
Netflix CEO Bela Bajaria doesn’t feel bad about canceling The Residence, even though it was nominated for an Emmy.
The streaming giant’s chief content officer has thought about why she canceled the murder mystery comedy starring Uzo Abuda as police expert Cordelia Cupp. The show was nominated for a number of Primetime Emmy Awards this year.
Bela told The Hollywood Reporter, “No, because I always knew she’d be recognized.” When asked if she had second thoughts about the choice to end the show,
The first episode of the show, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” was nominated for Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Single Episode, and Uzo was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
Another award that could go to this show is Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour Or More).
Bela claimed that she “loves” the show and doesn’t feel bad that she found out about its cancellation two weeks before the Emmy nominations.
She answered, “No, I don’t really care when the news is or isn’t.” The Residence is great, in my opinion. We pushed for it and made it happen.
As Uzo Aduba says, “I’ve worked for Netflix for a long time and have won awards before.” That being said, she did an amazing job.
“Her name doesn’t surprise me at all. There was no doubt in our minds that she would understand. So, I think that work is great. The work was finished, and everyone loved it. She did a great job, and now she’s being recognized for it.
She said the story was mostly about how “great” the show and Uzo were.
Bela also said Netflix would support dropped shows during award season just as much as their airing counterparts.
In addition, she said, “We’re going to support—yeah!” Obviously, we did for her and the show. What I think people forget is that, as I said before, we created it, pushed for it, and really sold it. We did everything.
“And as long as those people are involved, we will always support that because we work with them and will continue to do so.”
