Michelle and Barack Obama Make Jokes About Rumors of Divorce: “For a while, it was touch and go”
The former First Lady also discusses her honest feelings about their union.
Speaking out about the divorce rumors, former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama continue to chuckle about them.
Barack joined her and her brother on the most recent episode of her podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson.
“Wait, you guys like each other?” Robinson teased. Being in the same room as each other is really pleasant. “I know because when we aren’t, folks think we’re divorced,” Michelle added.
Then Barack joked, “She brought me back! For a while, it was touch and go. Over the past few months, there has been growing speculation that they had broken up after 32 years.
Craig recalls being asked what Barack had done to Michelle by a woman who approached him at the airport. His response, “Well, what makes you think he messed up?” added to the drama. “I wanted to keep this conversation so that I could tell you about it,” the author later wrote.
“These are the kinds of things that I just miss,” Barack acknowledged when discussing the rumors. I have no idea what this stuff is about, so when someone brings it up to me, I ask, “What are you talking about?”
Michelle acknowledged that she had never considered divorce in relation to their marriage. “I have never considered leaving my partner at any point during our marriage,” she clarified. “And because of the man I’m married to, I’ve improved as a person and we’ve had a lot of fun times and adventures, as well as some really difficult times.”
When she declined to go to Trump’s inauguration, divorce rumors intensified.
“What people don’t realize—or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me—was met with such ridicule and criticism,” she said in an earlier this year podcast episode. She also discussed why she chose to forgo the inauguration. “People had to assume that my marriage was failing because they couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason.”
In October 1992, the Obamas got married in Chicago. They swooned over each other like youthful lovers this past Valentine’s Day.
On Instagram, Barack stated, “If there’s one person I can always count on, it’s you, @BarackObama.” He also wrote, “Thirty-two years together and you still take my breath away.” My rock is you. It has always been. There always will be.
