Mozambique opens the door for TotalEnergies to resume its $20 billion LNG project, according to the report
The Portuguese news agency Lusa reported on Monday that Mozambique had established the prerequisites for the restart of TotalEnergies’ $20 billion liquefied natural gas project in the nation.
After halting construction in 2021 due to an insurgency attack linked to the Islamic State that threatened its Afungi site in northern Mozambique, TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) has announced plans to resume building this summer.
Patrick Pouyanne, the CEO of TotalEnergies, met with Daniel Chapo, the president of Mozambique, on Thursday to talk about resuming operations after security measures helped lessen but did not completely stop rebel attacks near its site.
Estevao Pale, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, referred to the president’s meeting last week when he stated, “It was a meeting with the perspective of restarting activities,” during a gathering in the province of Inhambane on Monday.
“At the government level, all the conditions are being created to allow investors to restart activities as quickly as possible,” Pale was cited as saying by Lusa.
TotalEnergies chose not to respond.
