Angola’s first gas-specific exploration well yields offshore gas
In Angola, Azule Energy, a joint venture between BP (BP.L) and Eni (ENI.MI), opened a new tab. The national oil and gas agency ANGP said late Friday that the company had found gas in its first exploration well specifically for gas off the coast of Angola.
Preliminary estimates indicate that the gas volumes in the lower Congo Basin’s Gajajeira-01 well, which was discovered in block 1/14, could surpass 1 trillion cubic feet, and that the condensate-bearing rock could contain up to 100 million barrels.
“This is a historic moment for Angolan gas exploration,” Azule Energy CEO Adriano Mongini said in a joint statement.
“The Gajajeira-01 well is the first dedicated gas exploration well in the country and its success reinforces our confidence in the potential of the Lower Congo Basin.”
The block is run by Azule Energy (35%) in collaboration with Sonangol E&P (25%), Equinor (30%), and Acrep S.A. (10%), a privately held Angolan business.
