A Madagascar court orders a man to be castrated for raping a kid

A court official in Madagascar said that a man was given the harshest punishment possible for raping a child in 2024: surgery castration. This is the first time that such a punishment has been given on the island in the Indian Ocean.

A six-year-old girl was raped and tried to be killed in Imerintsiatosika, a town 30 km west of Antananarivo, the attorney general at the Court of Appeal said on Thursday. This led to the filing of the case.

He said in a video statement sent to the media by the ministry of justice, “The person charged in this case was sentenced by the Court to life in prison with hard labor and castration.”

As part of a 2024 rule in Madagascar that deals with rapes of children aged 10 and under, the punishment was put in place last year. The government said the law was made because there had been so many cases like this in the courts.

“Today’s decision is a strong and significant response from the justice system, intended also to serve as a warning to anyone with similar malicious intentions,” he said.

Some people who have committed sex crimes have been surgically castrated in the Czech Republic and Germany with their permission. Louisiana was the first U.S. state to require the procedure for some sex crimes against children last year.

In some U.S. states and other countries, like Poland and South Korea, chemical castration has been made a sentence for sex crimes. It is done by giving drugs over time and can be undone. Great Britain is thinking about making people use it.

Organizations that work to protect human rights say that both of these actions are wrong and that the focus should be on getting victims of abuse to come forward while keeping them safe from harm and working to stop abuse in general.
