Ice Cube Reacts When Selena Gomez Identifies Him as Her Boyhood Sweetheart
“A lot of ’em like me, homie.”
Ice Cube shared some of his own in response to Selena Gomez’s recent admission that he was her childhood infatuation.
In a recent interview with the 3’s and Ones podcast, the West Coast legend responded to Gomez’s remarks from a Complex GOAT Talk episode. Gomez listed Ice Cube as her early childhood crush in the June interview, stating, “I had the biggest crush on [Ice Cube].” I was around five years old. It’s strange, but I simply assumed he would keep me safe.
Although he didn’t specify when he originally learned about it, Cube acknowledged that this wasn’t new to him, saying, “I heard this years ago.” He responded in jest, saying, “A lot of ’em like me, homie. How about this? Hey, how are you? I too experienced crushes when I was younger.
Vanity, the late singer best known as the lead vocalist of Vanity 6 and for the 1982 Prince-produced hit song “Nasty Girl,” was the first person Ice Cube mentioned when asked to pick one. He went on to say, “I had about four.”
In other parts of his interview, Cube discussed how musicians “check in” when they’re in a new city, but he said he’s never really had to do that. In his own words, “No, I wouldn’t consider it checking in.” “I never had the feeling that I needed to call someone to let them know I was here in order to be safe.” I’ll give you a call because I want to have sex with you; otherwise, I won’t be able to.
However, he continued, he does understand “the motto” that other artists may live by when it comes to “checking in” with prominent local people. He joked, “Who am I checking in to? Who will ensure my safety? Not even the police can do that. The act of checking in won’t stop someone from doing something.
As he wrapped up the discussion, Cube said that while he “understands the culture,” “Ice Cube don’t have to check in.”
