King Charles to Macron: France and the UK Must Work Together to Combat Global Defense, Technology, and Climate Threats

King Charles calls for renewed UK-France unity in uncertain times and alerts Macron to growing global threats during the Windsor feast.

French President Emmanuel Macron has been informed by King Charles that France and the United Kingdom must “stand together” against a “multitude of complex threats” that cut over national boundaries and resist isolation.

The monarch stated, “Today, we are faced with a multitude of complex threats from terrorism to climate change and the misuse of technology emanating from multiple directions and across borders,” during a state supper held at Windsor Castle on Tuesday night. We cannot be shielded from these difficulties by any stronghold.

The King will emphasize the two countries’ historic connection and the need for collaboration and solidarity in the face of contemporary threats in his keynote speech.

According to pre-released statements, King Charles would state, “Our citizens have admired, laughed, and imitated each other for centuries.” There will be problems “that know no borders, from which no fortress can protect us” and “complex threats emanating from multiple directions,” he would warn.

In addition to discussing defense, technology, migration, and the existential threats presented by climate change, the King’s address is anticipated to highlight common values and a “tireless determination” to act on them globally.

The state visit coincides with a pivotal diplomatic moment as the UK, led by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, attempts to rebuild its relationship with European allies after Brexit. Additionally, the visit is a soft-power move to reassure partners and the public about the Anglo-French alliance’s ongoing strength.

Earlier in the day, the King and Queen Camilla, along with the Prince and Princess of Wales, welcomed President Macron and his wife Brigitte to Windsor in a complete royal ceremony. A military parade, carriage procession, and a formal greeting on a specially built dais in Windsor town center were all part of the royal visit.

Macron and Prime Minister Starmer will have a bilateral meeting in Downing Street on Thursday.

Defense cooperation, economic expansion, and combating illegal migration—especially small boat crossings in the English Channel—are anticipated to be major themes.

“The UK is paying because we, France, are doing the job for the UK. You can’t prevent all of them, but we are doing our best,” said Sylvie Bermann, the former French ambassador to the UK, in response to criticism of Britain’s financial assistance to stop the crossings.

The Macrons will also honor the late Queen Elizabeth II while they are there by touring her tomb and the horse that Macron gave her as a Platinum Jubilee present. In a rare speech to the Houses of Parliament, President Macron is anticipated to speak to UK lawmakers on Wednesday.

This week’s visit will once again highlight scientific cooperation, as the King did during his own state visit to France in 2023, when he gave a passionate address in support of Ukraine and climate action. During their planned visit to Imperial College London, the Macrons will see technological and artificial intelligence advancements.

For this crucial visit, Windsor Castle has taken center stage while Buckingham Palace undergoes renovations. However, the symbolism is still powerful: a reminder of the entente cordiale in a world that is becoming more and more divided.
