China permits the importation of Ethiopian soymeal in order to diversify its supplies

A Chinese customs announcement revealed that, in the midst of a trade battle between Beijing and Washington, China has authorized the import of soybean meal from Ethiopia as part of its efforts to diversify its protein sources.

China will allow Ethiopian soymeal that satisfies its phytosanitary requirements and is pest-free to enter the nation on July 3, the statement added.

As part of a larger plan to diversify supply and lessen dependency on imported soybeans, this is being done. The volume is not anticipated to be high,” Rosa Wang, an analyst at the agro-consultancy JCI in Shanghai, stated.

In an effort to lessen possible delays from the U.S.-China trade war, Chinese feedmakers secured the first supply of soymeal from Argentina since imports were authorized in 2019.

Although the majority of China’s soybean imports come from Brazil and the United States, soymeal imports are still quite small.

Uruguay’s soymeal imports were also authorized by China in June, joining a growing list that already includes Argentina, Brazil, Russia, and Belarus.
