Fernando Torres has been unexpectedly recognized as Chelsea’s greatest player of all time
Ruben Neves’ claim that Fernando Torres is the greatest player in Chelsea history has generated controversy.
In an exclusive interview with GOAL, the former Wolves midfielder, who currently plays for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, made the unexpected decision when asked to select the best players in the history of elite European clubs.
Even though Torres only scored 45 goals in 172 games for Chelsea, Neves commended the Spanish striker’s contributions to the team, especially during their successful 2011–12 campaign when they won both the FA Cup and the Champions League.
Neves commented on the Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo controversy as well, naming both players the greatest in Real Madrid and Barcelona history, respectively.
When asked to choose between the two for the title of greatest of all time, Neves politely responded, “Both.”
Despite not being Chelsea’s most prolific goal scorer, Torres retired from football in 2019, but Neves’ selection shows how much of an impact he had on the team while he was at Stamford Bridge.
Currently playing for Inter Miami and Al-Nassr, respectively, Messi and Ronaldo are two of the best players in the world who continue to defy age.
