Wydad AC Was Disqualified from the Club World Cup Following Back-to-Back Losses
Back-to-back losses cemented Wydad Athletic Club’s early elimination from the FIFA Club World Cup, bringing an agonizing end to their hopes of making a deep run.
Despite facing European powerhouses Manchester City and Juventus in a difficult group, the Moroccan champions, one of the African clubs that proudly and passionately represent the continent, failed to earn a single point. They lost 4-1 to Juventus after losing 2-0 to Manchester City in the first game, which left them in last place in the group and mathematically barred from making it to the round of 16.
Wydad found it difficult to match the speed, accuracy, and depth of their heavyweight opponents, even if they displayed moments of tenacity and fight, particularly against City, where they held their own for a significant portion of the bout.
Although the Moroccan team did manage to score once against Juventus, displaying flashes of their attacking ability, they were ultimately outclassed by the Italian team’s clinical finishing and big-stage experience.
Amine Benhachem, the coach of Wydad AC, acknowledged the difficulty of the task but commended his team’s effort:
“We played two of the top football teams in the world. Each and every one of our players gave it their all. We will learn from this experience and return stronger.
The fact that Wydad qualified for the Club World Cup was a happy moment for many supporters, demonstrating their supremacy in African football. Even if the early departure is regrettable, the players and staff have learned a lot and gained exposure from playing against top international clubs.
Wydad will just play for pride in their final group match, hoping to give their fans something to cheer about before they exit the competition.
Ultimately, Wydad AC’s campaign will be recalled for its bravery as well as the sobering reminder of the continued divide between the best in Africa and the world’s top football players.
