Rwanda shows support for Qatar in the wake of the Iran missile strike

Rwanda has shown support for the State of Qatar in the wake of Iran’s recent strike on Monday, June 23, which attacked the Al-Udeid Air Base.

The State of Qatar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, spoke with Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe over the phone, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The statement states that during their discussion, Minister Nduhungirehe “condemned the recent missile attack on Al Udeid Air Base, in violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and expressed Rwanda’s solidarity and support to the State of Qatar.”

The US-run base was attacked by Iran, which Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani called “an unacceptable act that violates Qatar’s policy of good neighborliness.”

Flight problems resulted from the Gulf nation’s closure of its airspace as the war between Israel, Iran, and the United States intensified.

Amid the issue, RwandAir said Monday it will suspend flights to and from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Doha, Qatar.

In a number of areas, such as defense security, ICT, and aviation, Qatar and Rwanda work closely together. The $2.2 billion New Kigali International Airport in Bugesera and the partnership between RwandAir and Qatar Airways are examples of the two nations’ long-term strategic alliances.
