Vondrousova wins the Berlin Open after defeating qualifier Wang
Marketa Vondrousova, a former Wimbledon champion, completed an unlikely journey to her first trophy since her London victory two years ago on Sunday by defeating Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu in three sets to claim the Berlin Open title.
The 25-year-old Czech was competing in her first final since winning Wimbledon in 2023, having fallen to 164th place in the world following a year marred by injuries.
She had to put in a lot of effort to win 7-6(10) 4-6 6-2, and in the close first-set tiebreak, she even had to save six set points.
Vondrousova will now be a formidable opponent at Wimbledon after her victory, which occurs one week before the tournament begins.
It’s good to see so many people. After winning her third career title, the Czech commented, “I truly enjoyed the tennis week and the support.”
“Congrats on a great week, you played an amazing match,” she remarked, referring to Wang. “We had everything we needed, and it was a fantastic week.
“I think our situation here could not have been better. We were all putting in a lot of effort. Our goal in coming here was to try to win the first game. “I’m so happy,” Vondrousova continued.
Wang continued to cause trouble with her precise precision as she shot numerous baseline wins. Wang had to fight her way through the qualifying round and then defeated four top-20 players to make it to her first-ever tour final.
Vondrousova’s serve appeared invincible until the seventh game, when Wang gained her first break point, breaking Vondrousova, who slipped and injured her ankle.
However, after Wang, 23, had squandered six set points, the Czech rallied to win the tie-break.
After breaking her opponent once in the second set, the 23-year-old leveled the score in her first singles tour final, displaying little nervousness.
However, Vondrousova, who defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Berlin semifinals and Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the opening round, came back with two of her own breaks to lead 4-1 in the final.
With a fantastic dropshot, a crosscourt backhand winner, and a strong forehand that forced Wang to make a mistake on matchpoint number one, she then produced a flawless service game at 5-2.
