Zelensky names a new leader for Ukraine’s land forces after the deadly Russian attack
Zelensky has designated Hennadiy Shapovalov as the new commander of land forces following a lethal Russian attack on a training site.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has named Hennadiy Shapovalov as the new commander of Ukraine’s land forces, succeeding Mykhailo Drapatyi, who resigned after a tragic Russian strike on a military training area in southeastern Ukraine.
The appointment received confirmation through a presidential decree released on Thursday. Shapovalov brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the commander of Operational Command “South” and most recently as a liaison officer at a NATO coordination centre in Germany.
Shapovalov takes over for Drapatyi, who resigned earlier this month following the attack that resulted in considerable casualties among Ukrainian personnel. The incident ignited public scrutiny and prompted inquiries regarding security training and battlefield readiness.
In a significant military reshuffle, Drapatyi has been appointed to lead Ukraine’s joint forces command — a crucial role as the conflict with Russia escalates.
