Chelsea: FA Charges Mudryk with Anti-Droping Violation
Mykhailo Mudryk, a winger for Chelsea, has been charged by the English FA with breaking anti-doping rules after testing positive for meldonium in December 2024.
After being temporarily suspended following the incident, the Ukrainian international now faces the possibility of a four-year ban. Citing Articles 3 and 4 of its anti-doping code, the FA announced the accusation on Wednesday and refrained to speak further while the matter is still pending.
For a guy who was once regarded as one of Europe’s best prospects, this represents a shocking decline. Mudryk’s path in England has been tumultuous when he was signed by Chelsea in January 2023 for €70 million to steal him from Arsenal. Chelsea’s disappointments have been exacerbated by the doping controversy, and his performance—10 goals and 11 assists—fell short of expectations.
The illegal drug that was discovered in his blood, meldonium, is well-known in Eastern Europe and was the reason why tennis player Maria Sharapova was previously suspended. The FA’s official charge implies a protracted legal and athletic battle is ahead, despite Mudryk’s insistence on his innocence and his claim that he never intentionally used a prohibited substance.
