Szczesny will continue as the goalkeeper for the UCL and Copa del Rey final, according to Hansi Flick
Wojciech Szczesny will start in goal for Tuesday’s Champions League game and the “El Clasico” against Real Madrid, according to Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, despite Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s impressive performance in Saturday’s 2-1 triumph over relegated Real Valladolid.
After goals from Raphinha and Fermin Lopez in the second half turned back the home team’s lead, Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga grew, and Ter Stegen, who had been out of commission for seven months, was in fine form.
Flick said reporters, “We’ll see about Marc; he did well today, but Szczesny will play in the Champions League and against Real Madrid.”
The German manager made nine changes to his starting lineup for the Valladolid game because of the impending Champions League fixture on Tuesday and the meeting versus Madrid the following weekend, which would likely cause player fatigue.
“I’m not let down. The players find it difficult because they are young when so many adjustments are made. I think they exist. I am confident. The level changes when there is a lot of rotation.
“I was able to give some players a break and give others some playing time.”
It wasn’t simple. Although there were a few errors and hurried changes, Ter Stegen, Ronald Araujo, and Andreas Christensen all played well, the manager said.
Even though his team was behind at the half, Flick was happy with their performance. He suggested that Fermin Lopez might start for Milan and commended Raphinha’s: He is a player who can start at any time. He is capable of playing a variety of positions.
“I’m happy that we achieved the three points that were the target. “The mission is done,” Flick continued.
