Bayern forward Kane has finally concluded his trophy drought by securing the Bundesliga title
Harry Kane, an England forward, won the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich in his second season there on Sunday, thereby ending his trophy drought of a lifetime.
In addition to breaking a league record two weeks ago with his 60th goal in his first 60 league appearances for Bayern, the England captain appears to be on track to become the first player in Bundesliga history to win the top scorer award in each of his first two seasons.
Bayern now leads its second-place rivals by an insurmountable eight points with two games remaining after Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw at Freiburg on Sunday. At RB Leipzig on Saturday, Bayern drew 3-3.
Considered by many to be among the best strikers of his generation, Kane was the highest scorer in England’s history and ranked second on the Premier League’s all-time scoring list. He also received numerous individual honors.
However, after scoring almost 400 goals for clubs and his country, he hadn’t won a single team championship, and rumors of a “Kane title curse” had been circulating for years.
That came to an end on Sunday as Bayern defeated Leverkusen to win the German league for the 34th time, and the 33rd time since the Bundesliga’s inception.
After receiving his fifth yellow card last week, Kane was suspended and was forced to watch from the stands on Saturday before a late equalizer by Leipzig ruined any planned Bayern celebrations.
Prior to joining Bayern in a league-record deal worth 100 million euros ($114 million), Kane had played for Tottenham Hotspur for the most of his professional career, serving from 2009 to 2023 with a few loan stints in between.
Despite finishing second in the Champions League in 2019 and taking the national team to successive finals at Euro 2020 and 2024, he has failed to win a title with Spurs in England.
His goal in joining Bayern, the record-holding German team and six-time European champion, was to finally add trophies to his goal-scoring totals and realize his dream of winning a championship.
But in his debut season, he witnessed Bayer Leverkusen easily win both the domestic league and the Cup without losing, ending Bayern’s 11-year winning streak, while the Kane title ‘curse’ headlines reappeared.
He was unstoppable this season, though, as he scored 24 league goals before Saturday’s match to maintain Bayern dominant for the majority of the season.
