The US commerce chief says that on Tuesday, Trump will determine the precise tariff levels for Canada and Mexico
President Donald Trump will decide whether to maintain the proposed 25% tariff level, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated on Sunday, although the duties on Canada and Mexico will take effect on Tuesday.
According to Lutnick, “that is a fluid situation,” said the Fox News show “Sunday Morning Futures.”
“On Tuesday, tariffs will be imposed on Canada and Mexico. We will let the president and his team do the negotiating on exactly what they are.
Trump’s government initially hinted that it might not apply the full 25% tariffs that had been threatened to all Canadian non-energy imports and commodities from Mexico in Lutnick’s remarks.
He claimed that although the deadly narcotic fentanyl still enters the country, the two nations have “done a reasonable job” of guarding their borders with the US.
In relation to tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Trump created confusion last week when he suggested an April 2 deadline. He later reiterated the Tuesday deadline and stated that he will put an additional 10% duty on Chinese goods on Tuesday, thereby doubling the 10% levies that were imposed on February 4.
Trump is anticipated to increase duties on China on Tuesday, according to Lutnick, unless the nation stops fentanyl trafficking into the United States.
