Republicans in the House are pushing to have the Black Lives Matter Plaza in D.C. removed

“Black Lives Matter” is displayed in large yellow lettering on the asphalt of the two-block section of 16th Street NW, which is only a short distance from the White House. The location was created in June 2020 after national demonstrations in response to George Floyd’s death. It soon came to represent the movement and drew both praise and condemnation.

As part of a larger attempt to limit what they perceive to be left-wing influence in the nation’s capital, GOP lawmakers, led by Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), the chair of the House Oversight Committee, are now seeking to dismantle it.

“The Trump Administration and the House Oversight Committee are working on delivering a number of reforms to end left-wing pet projects and make our nation’s capital safe,” Comer stated. Addressing political abuses by the District government, like Black Lives Matter Plaza, is part of this.

The drive to demolish the plaza coincides with Republican attempts to increase their influence in Washington, D.C. Under the Home Rule Act of 1973, Congress has the authority to overrule municipal choices, and politicians have already stepped in on matters such as the city’s criminal justice reform.

Additionally, Trump and a number of GOP members have advocated for the complete federal takeover of D.C.
