Leaders from the UK and Europe Come Together to Draft a Peace Plan for Ukraine for US Discussions

Leaders from Britain and Europe are working together to draft a peace proposal for Ukraine that will be sent to the US for review.

In an important step toward obtaining Washington’s security guarantees that Kyiv believes are necessary to deter Russia, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed on Sunday that European leaders had decided to write a peace plan for Ukraine to deliver to the United States.

European leaders reaffirmed their strong support for Ukraine and promised to enhance aid during a London conference, two days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy argued with US President Donald Trump and abruptly canceled his visit to Washington.

The leaders also concurred that increasing defense spending is necessary to show Trump that Europe is capable of defending itself. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, proposed that the EU relax debt rules in order to support this endeavor.

The UK, Ukraine, France, and other countries would join a “coalition of the willing” to draft a peace plan for Trump, according to Starmer, who embraced a visibly distressed Zelenskiy on Saturday.

“Now is not the time for further discussion. Now is the moment to take action. It’s time to take charge, lead, and come together with a fresh strategy for a fair and sustainable peace,” Starmer stated.

Prior to the event, French President Emmanuel Macron told Le Figaro that the plan would involve a one-month ceasefire that would include air and sea attacks but not ground warfare, although leaders did not elaborate. Although it was unclear if other countries had accepted this requirement, he stressed that European troops would be sent in the event of a wider peace agreement.

Zelenskiy claimed to have gained “Europe’s clear support” and cooperation after the meeting.

In his nightly video address, he declared, “Diplomacy will be pursued for the sake of peace.” “And for the sake of us all being together—Ukraine, Europe as a whole, and America, of course.”

Zelenskiy had already stated his continued desire in striking a minerals deal with the United States and reiterated that Ukraine will not give up any land to Russia in a peace accord.

Following their contentious Friday exchange, he also attempted to minimize tensions with Trump by stating that he thought their relationship could be saved but that future discussions should be held behind closed doors.

“I don’t think the format of what happened brought anything positive or additional to us as partners,” he stated.

After the Oval Office dispute sparked concerns that Washington may withdraw backing and impose a peace solution mediated by Russia, European leaders are acting quickly to guarantee Kyiv is not excluded from any negotiations.

Seeing it as a possible means of obtaining US security guarantees for Ukraine, a number of European leaders emphasized the need of higher defense spending.

“It is now crucial to increase defense investment for a long time after a long period of underinvestment,” von der Leyen told reporters.

She went on to say that Europe must turn Ukraine into “a steel porcupine that is indigestible for potential invaders.”
