A 1-0 loss at Betis ends Atletico’s run of wins with an own goal by Gimenez
Atletico Madrid lost 1-0 to Real Betis on Sunday because defender Jose Maria Gimenez scored an own goal. This ended their LaLiga win streak.
Early in the game, Gimenez blocked Abde Ezzalzouli’s cross into Jan Oblak’s net, giving the home team the lead. This put Atletico in a lot of trouble.
Betis pushed hard and tried to double their lead, especially through striker Vitor Roque. He missed several chances and had a goal ruled out for offside in the second half as the guests had trouble getting going.
After their first loss of the season, Diego Simeone’s team lost badly to Lille 3-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday. They are now fourth in the Spanish top flight with 20 points, two more than Betis.
