General Nzabamwita displays his qualifications to represent Rwanda in Russia

On Tuesday, April 22, Rwanda’s ambassador-designate to Russia, Maj Gen Joseph Nzabamwita, gave his letters of credence to the Russian Federation’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mikhail Bogdanov.

In December 2024, Rwanda appointed Nzabamwita as its ambassador-designate to Russia.

He was the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) Secretary General before becoming the Presidential Advisor on Security.

Lt Gen Mushyo Kamanzi, the envoy to Russia since 2019, will be replaced by Nzabamwita.

The Embassy of Rwanda in Russia reports that the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1963.

At the ambassadorial level, both nations currently maintain positive ties through their respective permanent diplomatic representations.

The two nations’ bilateral cooperation centers on cultural linkages, human resource development, education, politics, and the military.

Additionally, the two nations collaborate on the development of nuclear energy.
Russia provides some training for police personnel and university scholarships for Rwandans.

The last 50 years have seen about 800 Rwandan students graduate from Russian universities in a variety of fields, such as political science, international affairs, medicine, and law.

Rwandans with diplomatic and service passports will also be able to enter Russia without a visa after an agreement was signed in November 2024.
