Argentina claims the Women’s Hockey World Cup title, ending the Dutch dominance
Argentina emerged as the champions of the Women’s Hockey World Cup on Saturday, triumphing over the hosts and favorites, the Netherlands, with a score of 3-1 in a shootout after the final ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Dutch aimed for a fourth consecutive World Cup title and took the lead with a goal from tournament top-scorer Yibbi Jansen in the 30th minute, marking her eighth goal of the World Cup.
However, Argentina equalized in the 54th minute through Maria Granatto, bringing the match to penalties.
Argentina has secured its third World Cup title, marking its first victory since 2010, and it serves as a form of retribution for the defeat in the final against the Dutch four years prior.
Belgium secured their first bronze medal since 1978 by defeating Australia 1-0 in the third-place playoff. Charlotte Englebert scored the sole goal of the match.
