Jane Fonda stands by Mark Ruffalo amid allegations of antisemitism related to the Paramount merger controversy
Jane Fonda stands by Mark Ruffalo as he dismisses accusations of antisemitism, asserting that critiques of Paramount’s merger should not be stifled.
Jane Fonda has come to the defense of actor Mark Ruffalo following accusations from Paramount that he invoked antisemitic tropes while criticizing the company’s proposed merger with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Fonda, a two-time Oscar winner and founder of the Committee for the First Amendment, stated that Paramount was trying to undermine Ruffalo’s criticism by branding it as antisemitic.
In a statement released by the organization on Tuesday, Fonda expressed that Ruffalo had the right to publicly address issues related to politics, influential corporations, and the proposed merger.
“Mark Ruffalo possesses the right to express his views on politics, influential corporations, and this perilous merger, unequivocally.”
Fonda claimed that Paramount was leveraging the antisemitism allegation to shift focus away from issues regarding the concentration of media ownership.
“Labeling his criticism as antisemitic serves as a tactic to undermine valid concerns regarding the merger and diverts attention from the crucial question that Paramount seems eager to avoid: is it appropriate for a single company to amass such significant control over our movies, television, and news?” she stated.
She also connected the controversy to the original Committee for the First Amendment, which was created to combat blacklisting and intimidation based on political beliefs.
“We will not remain passive while the government or its allies attempt to resurrect those tactics to intimidate activists into silence today,” Fonda stated.
The disagreement intensified when Ruffalo posted a video of Oracle executive vise chair Safra Catz talking about technology provided to the Israeli military during its actions in Gaza after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
Paramount later expressed its criticism of Ruffalo, stating that it was “troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute.”
The company stated that it does not accept prejudice against anyone.
Ruffalo dismissed the accusation, calling it “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.”
He contended that critiques of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, military technology contracts, or the executives engaged in providing such technology should not be conflated with animosity toward Jewish individuals.
Ruffalo expressed that his stance was rooted in his political beliefs and emphasized his “deep love and respect” for Jewish individuals, noting that Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones had profoundly impacted his life and career.
Several Hollywood figures, including Hannah Einbinder and John Cusack, have expressed their support for Ruffalo. However, organizations such as the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Anti-Defamation League have backed claims that his remarks were antisemitic.
The disagreement arises within the context of a broader conflict regarding Paramount Skydance’s suggested takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery.
In February, Netflix withdrew its pursuit of Warner Bros. after opting not to raise its offer in response to Paramount Skydance’s reported proposal of $31 per share. Paramount Skydance initiated a hostile takeover attempt following Netflix’s agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery in December.
Ruffalo and attorney Norm Eisen had previously campaigned against the proposed takeover. In April, they called on state officials to utilize antitrust laws to prevent the deal.
Over 5,000 individuals have endorsed an open letter organized by the Committee for the First Amendment, the Future Film Coalition, the Writers Guild of America, and the Democracy Defenders Fund.
The signatories contended that the proposed merger might jeopardize the sustainability of the broader creative industry.
