With 2:59 remaining in the third quarter at Crypto.com Arena, Atlanta held a commanding lead of 84-53. Sparks guard Jihyun Park stood at the free throw line when a green object emerged from the stands, bounced in front of her, and skidded across the paint near the Los Angeles bench. Someone from the bench area tossed a towel over it. Sparks Center Cameron Brink launched it away. Security took it away with the towel, and the game continued.
Before any of that, Reese was already signaling. From the scorer’s table, she gestured up into the stands, and Prime announcer Mike Watts reported it live, stating that Reese was identifying the perpetrator.
The video captures a man departing from the 100s section, forcefully pushing a security guard as he exits. He did not succeed. The arena staff apprehended him during the commotion, leading to his arrest. Front Office Sports was the first to report on the arrest and the indefinite ban, which applies to WNBA games, NBA games, and all other league-affiliated events.
His identity has not been disclosed to the public. Clips circulating on X depict an individual wearing a Luka Doncic jersey attempting to evade security, although it has not been verified that this person is the one who was apprehended.
The WNBA released a statement following the game reiterating its policy. The league emphasized that the safety and well-being of all individuals in its arenas is of utmost importance. It noted that objects thrown onto the court or into the seating area create a safety hazard for players, officials, and fans. According to WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be promptly ejected and subjected to a minimum one-year ban, along with potential arrest and prosecution by local authorities.
This marks the inaugural occurrence of the season, taking place 381 days after the previous event. Last summer, it happened almost every week. It began on July 29, 2025, during a Dream Valkyries game in College Park, Georgia, and extended to arenas in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Phoenix, and Los Angeles over the course of approximately five games. During that period, two individuals were taken into custody. Delbert Carver, 23, faced charges of disorderly conduct, public indecency, and criminal trespass related to the initial incident. In an affidavit, he told police that he intended it as a joke that gained viral attention.
The aspect that prevents the incident from being solely humorous occurred during a Liberty game, where a 32-year-old man faced two counts of assault after police reported that the object he threw struck a 12-year-old girl. He entered a plea of not guilty, and his attorney stated that the video does not depict anyone being struck.
For Reese, the throw disrupted what had been an otherwise perfect night. She concluded the game with 20 points on a perfect nine of nine shooting and secured 10 rebounds, marking her 10th consecutive game with double-digit rebounds, contributing to a 124-88 victory.
