Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time penalty secures a point for Liverpool against Newcastle

Liverpool secured a dramatic stoppage-time draw against Newcastle as Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the dying moments at St James’ Park.

Liverpool managed to secure a thrilling 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in their opening match of the season at St James’ Park, with Dominik Szoboszlai successfully converting a penalty in stoppage time to thwart the home team’s hopes of victory.

Anthony Elanga provided Newcastle with an early advantage in the fifth minute, taking advantage of a swift counter-attack to put Liverpool on the back foot right from the start.

The Reds came back strong after halftime, with Cody Gakpo finding the net to equalize in the 55th minute. Newcastle, however, regained their lead just two minutes later when Joe Willock scored to make it 2-1.

Liverpool pressed on in search of an equalizer as the match approached stoppage time, ultimately being awarded a penalty when Lewis Hall fouled Victor Muñoz within the box.

Szoboszlai stepped up and confidently converted from the spot in the ninth minute of added time, securing a point for Liverpool in an exhilarating Premier League match.

Newcastle experienced disappointment after nearly clinching all three points, whereas Liverpool will draw confidence from their late resurgence.
