Ben Affleck’s mother has passed away just days after granting her last wish

Ben Affleck and his family are grieving the passing of the woman who influenced countless generations of their lives. 

Chris Anne Affleck, the mother of the actor and a dedicated educator, passed away at the age of 83 following a struggle with pancreatic cancer.

Her passing occurred merely days after she reached the milestone she had long aspired to, marking an emotional conclusion to a life characterized by education, activism, and a steadfast dedication to those she cherished.

Chris Anne Affleck passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 2, just two days following her grandson’s high school graduation.

In December, doctors reportedly informed her that she had approximately six months to live; however, those who were close to her noted her steadfast determination to achieve one significant milestone before parting ways.

She fulfilled her wish on May 31, celebrating her graduation in the company of family before passing away just days later.

Chris Anne is survived by her sons, Ben and Casey, along with her five grandchildren, Indiana, Violet, Atticus, Fin, and Sam, who were affectionately referred to in her obituary as “the animating force of her last two decades.”

Long before Ben Affleck achieved fame in Hollywood, his mother had already established an impressive career of her own. 

Chris Anne, a Harvard University graduate, dedicated 35 years to teaching in public schools before retiring in 2008, firmly believing that every child deserves the same opportunity to learn and succeed. 

Ben proudly reflected on her commitment during a 2012 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, stating, “My mother taught public school, went to Harvard, and then got her master’s there and taught fifth and sixth grade in a public school.” 

That enthusiasm shaped her approach to every classroom. Her obituary states that students from all backgrounds, whether they had “just arrived from Haiti or the Cambridge upper crust,” were embraced as “a cherished citizen of her classroom republic, equal to each other and to herself.”

Teaching constituted just one aspect of the values that Chris Anne embraced throughout her life. Her obituary portrays a woman who consistently stood up against injustice, demonstrating her courage from a young age. 

While attending the prestigious Nightingale-Bamford School, she resisted when a teacher proposed that she should consider “the other side” before voicing her criticisms of Jim Crow. 

Instead of accepting the comment, Chris Anne reached out to a Woolworth’s store directly to inquire if Black customers had been denied service. 

That resolve remained with her for decades. She subsequently journeyed to Mississippi to instruct literacy classes during Freedom Summer, participated in marches against the Vietnam War, and supported numerous civil rights initiatives that characterized the 1960s. 

Her obituary noted that she embraced the idea of “being willing to acknowledge that she might be wrong and never allowing that uncertainty to serve as an excuse for inaction,” a principle that shaped her activism and her role as an educator.

As family and friends honor Chris Anne’s extraordinary life, one of Ben Affleck’s most cherished memories with his mother has gained even more profound meaning. 

In 2023, the actor reflected on his pivotal night at the 1998 Academy Awards, where he and Matt Damon received the Best Original Screenplay award for “Good Will Hunting.”

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Ben shared his decision to invite their mothers as dates, breaking away from the typical Hollywood custom. 

The 53-year-old recalled hugging his mom after their victory and was taken aback that others considered the choice to be unusual. 

“We were sitting next to our moms when we won, and we hugged them,” he recalled, adding, “I remember how everyone made such a big deal out of it as if it were something extraordinary… ‘Why?” Why is it unusual that we’re bringing our moms? “Who else do you think we might invite?” 

Ben Affleck revealed the pivotal role his mother played in igniting his passion for acting.

The memorable Oscars moment was crafted over many years. Long before Chris Anne was supporting her son from the audience at the Academy Awards, she had already played a crucial role in guiding him toward the journey that would ultimately take him there.

In a 2006 interview with Boston Magazine, Ben shared that his mother motivated both him and his brother Casey to try out for local productions, commercials, and television movies, thanks to her Harvard roommate, casting director Patty Collins. 

Reflecting on those early days, he confessed, “I don’t know if we were truly acting.” We often found ourselves as extras. My mother was incredibly supportive. However, we didn’t pay much attention to it aside from the fact that it was a day off from school and 20 dollars.
