Avatar creators have revealed the first film from Avatar Studios at Comic-Con and announced new series, maintaining a positive outlook despite recent leak challenges.
The creators of the celebrated animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, revealed their newest project, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, on Thursday at San Diego Comic-Con. They characterized it as a significant production aimed at honoring the franchise’s dedicated fan base.
The animated fantasy film represents the inaugural feature from Avatar Studios, the production division created by the duo in collaboration with Nickelodeon to broaden the Avatar universe through new films and television series.
DiMartino explained that the choice to return with a feature-length production stemmed from a desire to make a striking comeback.
“We had numerous concepts for various projects in television and film,” DiMartino shared with Reuters. “The concept of beginning with a feature originated primarily from the studio, as we aim to make a significant return.”
The duo also revealed that the upcoming animated series, Avatar: Seven Havens, is set to debut on Paramount+ on October 9. The 26-episode series centers on a young Earthbender who learns she is the next Avatar following Korra, set in a world ravaged by a catastrophic event. Branded as humanity’s destroyer instead of its savior, she must navigate a fractured and perilous society.
The Comic-Con unveiling follows a tumultuous time for the franchise’s inaugural feature film. In April, the complete movie was leaked online following its upload by an unknown source to X. The leak came after Paramount decided to cancel the film’s planned theatrical release in October 2026, opting instead for a debut on Paramount+, where it is set to premiere on July 25.
Konietzko characterized the leak as a challenging time for the creative team.
“I awoke to the news on a Sunday morning,” he stated. “Experiencing this abrupt and rather discourteous event was quite severe.”
Despite the setback, he conveyed optimism about the franchise’s future, attributing its lasting popularity to its devoted global fan base.
The film showcases a talented voice cast, featuring Eric Nam as Aang, Dave Bautista as the antagonist Tagah, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Steven Yeun as Zuko, and Dionne Quan as Toph Beifong.
For Matten, portraying Katara holds deep meaning as an Indigenous actor who brings to life an Indigenous character.
“It directly impacts my Native community by allowing someone to take on this role,” she said, noting that the opportunity has enabled her to connect with broader audiences and decision-makers throughout the entertainment industry.
DiMartino and Konietzko had dedicated two years to developing a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender for Netflix before departing from the project in 2020, citing creative differences.
The live-action adaptation premiered in 2024, with Albert Kim serving as the showrunner for its inaugural season. Jabbar Raisani and Christine Boylan will take the helm for the second and third seasons after Kim’s exit in 2024.
The co-creators came together with Nickelodeon in 2021 to form Avatar Studios, a specialized production division aimed at broadening the original franchise through new animated films and series.
