Australia forward Volpato has reportedly tested positive for cocaine

Australia forward Cristian Volpato reportedly tested positive for cocaine during a roadside test after being stopped for speeding in Sydney on Friday, according to local media.

New South Wales Police reported that a 22-year-old man was pulled over for speeding on two occasions and underwent a drug test after driving a BMW at 109 kph (68 mph) in a 60 km/h zone on Anzac Bridge at approximately 1:10 a.m. on Friday.

The man received an infringement notice for speeding and had his international driver’s license suspended for six months. Authorities were persisting with their investigations.

Several Australian media outlets have identified Volpato as the driver, referencing a statement from the NSW Police.

Football Australia (FA) stated that it was aware of the allegations concerning one of its players.

We have been in contact with the player and continue to monitor the matter and support the player throughout this process,” an FA spokesperson stated, without naming the player.

Professional Footballers Australia, Australia’s players union, stated: “The PFA is aware of reports concerning Cristian Volpato and will ensure he is supported.

Volpato plays in Italy’s Serie A for Sassuolo and has represented Italy at junior levels before switching allegiance to Australia ahead of this year’s World Cup.

Volpato’s management and the Sassuolo club refrained from offering an immediate response.
