Mbappé Questions France’s Tactics Following 2-0 Defeat to Spain That Shatters World Cup Final Aspirations

Mbappé expresses his discontent with France’s tactics following their 2-0 defeat to Spain, which extinguishes their aspirations for a third consecutive World Cup final.

Kylian Mbappé openly criticized Didier Deschamps’ tactical approach following France’s 2-0 loss to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal, acknowledging that Les Bleus faltered both technically and tactically as their aspirations for a third consecutive World Cup final were dashed.

Spain exerted significant control over the match, with Rodri and Fabián Ruiz showcasing their dominance in midfield. Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty in the first half, followed by a second goal, ensured a well-earned victory for the reigning European champions.

“We had a numerical advantage in midfield, three against two, but facing Spain, that’s a tough challenge,” Mbappé remarked following the match. Fabián and Rodri had ample time to engage in play. Communication in the press was insufficient. I believe we should have employed a man-to-man strategy and compelled them to keep pace with us.

The captain of France acknowledged that his team failed to implement their strategy of pressing Spain high to interrupt their flow.

“We didn’t execute the game plan we aimed for, either technically or tactically,” he stated. “If you fail to perform in a World Cup semifinal, victory eludes you.” Spain adhered to their strategy, while we were unable to prevent them from dominating the match.

Mbappé highlighted France’s inadequate ball retention following their recovery of possession, noting that careless first touches consistently surrendered the initiative back to Spain.

“Even when we regained possession, our initial touches were lacking.” It is quite disappointing, yet from an objective standpoint, we did not combine all the necessary elements to achieve the final outcome.

Substitutions made by Deschamps in the second half did not alter the momentum, as France struggled to mount a significant comeback.

Substitute Rayan Cherki expressed his disappointment alongside Mbappé, acknowledging that Spain merited the win, even though he felt France had the superior team.

“They outperformed us in every aspect of the game and showed more hunger than we did,” Cherki stated. “Even on a less than perfect day, we must improve in our technical skills, tactical awareness, and overall determination.” Today, we found ourselves lacking in every aspect.

Mbappé’s frustration was clear late in the match when he collided with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón while trying to apply pressure, resulting in a yellow card in the 86th minute.

“As the captain, I accept complete responsibility,” Mbappé stated. “Our goal was to reach the final, but we fell short.”

France will now compete against the team that loses the Argentina-England semifinal in the third-place playoff on Saturday in Miami Gardens, while Spain has advanced to the World Cup final.
