E. Jean Carroll has been awarded $5.62 million from Trump in a case involving sex abuse and defamation

E. Jean Carroll has been awarded $5.62 million from Donald Trump following the Supreme Court’s decision to reject his appeal in her case.

Writer E. Jean Carroll has been awarded $5.62 million from US President Donald Trump, following a jury’s decision three years prior that granted her $5 million in damages in her case concerning sexual abuse and defamation.

Court records indicate that Carroll was awarded $5.62 million, inclusive of interest, following the US Supreme Court’s decision on June 29 to not hear Trump’s appeal, thereby facilitating the payment.

On Tuesday, Carroll informed her Substack blog subscribers about the payment in an email.

“The Eagle Has Landed,” she wrote, expressing gratitude to over a dozen current and former members of her legal team.

She also expressed, “And . . . a heartfelt, heartfelt thanks to Alina Habba, Esq.!” I couldn’t have achieved my success without your support.

Carroll’s lead attorney, Roberta Kaplan, expressed her approval of the payment.

“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury determined that President Trump was liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll,” Kaplan stated. “Today, we are pleased to announce that she has received the damages payment awarded to her by the jury following that verdict.”

The funds were maintained in a bank account overseen by the court as Trump sought an appeal. Following the Supreme Court’s rejection of the appeal, Carroll’s legal team requested the immediate release of the funds, whereas Trump’s lawyers sought additional delays.

A federal jury in 2023 determined that Trump was liable for sexual abuse and defamation regarding Carroll’s allegation that he assaulted her in a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York City during the 1990s. The jury awarded her $5 million in damages after determining that there was ample evidence to substantiate her claims.

Trump consistently refuted the allegations throughout the case. He was absent from the civil trial, and his legal team presented no witnesses before the jury reached its verdict.

The jury dismissed Carroll’s rape allegation according to New York law but determined that Trump was liable for sexual abuse and defamation. A judge subsequently determined that Carroll’s claim that Trump raped her was “substantially true.

Carroll, 82, is also waiting for the result of Trump’s appeal regarding a different jury verdict from January 2024, which determined he was liable for additional defamation against her and granted her $83 million in damages. Trump’s legal team has expressed their intention to bring that case before the Supreme Court.
