Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar, has passed away at the age of 74

Qatar’s former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has passed away at the age of 74, having played a pivotal role in transforming the Gulf state into a global power.

Qatar’s former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has passed away at the age of 74, as announced by the nation’s Amiri Diwan on Sunday.

The Amiri Diwan announced the passing of HH the Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, on Sunday morning. “May Allah have mercy on his soul and grant him the highest reward for his contributions to his homeland and nation,” the Diwan stated.

Sheikh Hamad governed Qatar from 1995 until 2013, when he transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, marking a rare instance of voluntary abdication by a hereditary ruler in the Gulf Arab region.

During his reign, he transformed Qatar from a modest Bedouin state into a significant regional and global player. He broadened the nation’s influence by initiating the Al Jazeera television network and ensured Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Qatar, a close ally of the United States, stands as the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas globally and has emerged as a significant force in Middle East diplomacy and international investment.

Sheikh Hamad ascended to power in 1995 following a peaceful transition that involved the ousting of his father. Eighteen years later, he relinquished his position in favor of his son to facilitate a seamless transition of power.
