South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away at the age of 25, only weeks after he represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Adams participated in all three of South Africa’s group matches as Bafana Bafana advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time before being defeated by co-hosts Canada in the round of 32.
South Africa’s minister of sport, arts, and culture, Gayton McKenzie, announced the news in a statement.
“I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Jayden Adams,” he stated.
“South African football has experienced the loss of one of its most promising young talents, and our nation stands in solidarity with his family, his teammates, and the millions of supporters who witnessed his journey from a budding academy prospect to a full Bafana Bafana international.”
Authorities announced that an investigation has been initiated following the discovery of a 25-year-old man’s body at a residence in Schotschekloof, a neighborhood in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.
McKenzie stated, “The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed, and I urge members of the media and the public to show restraint and compassion and to avoid speculation while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are afforded the space and privacy they require during this profoundly challenging time.

Adams began South Africa’s 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in their opening Group A match, having discovered just hours before kick-off that his grandmother had passed away.
The South African Football Players Union expressed its deep sorrow over the untimely passing of the midfielder, who made his senior international debut in 2022.
Jayden had recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, embodying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction.
“His passing is a profound loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football community, and the nation as a whole.
“South African football has lost a talented player, a dedicated contributor to the sport, and a young life that had so much potential ahead.”
Adams started his professional journey at Stellenbosch FC before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he achieved success by winning the South African league title and the CAF Champions League.
He was a member of the South Africa squad that advanced to the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, subsequently contributing to the team’s historic achievement at the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also honored the midfielder.
