Delta plane hit by firework during landing in Chicago; all passengers unharmed
Delta Air Lines reported that a firework hit one of its aircraft while descending into Chicago; however, the flight landed safely, and no injuries were reported.
On Saturday night, a firework struck Delta Air Lines Flight 1076, which was transporting passengers from Atlanta to Chicago, as it descended toward Midway International Airport. Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely, and there were no injuries reported, as stated by the airline and aviation authorities.
The airline stated that Flight 1076, operated by an Airbus A319, “reportedly made contact with a firework while descending” into Chicago.
“The flight successfully landed and taxied to the gate,” a Delta spokesperson informed the BBC. “No injuries occurred, and the incident was reported to the aviation authorities.”
The incident took place while millions of Americans were celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States with fireworks, a cherished tradition of Independence Day.
Delta Flight 1076 took off from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport at 7:51 p.m. EDT (00:51 BST) and landed at Chicago Midway International Airport at 8:33 p.m. CDT (02:33 BST).
Recordings from air traffic control documented the pilot’s report of the incident just prior to landing.
“We just had a firework hit our plane,” the pilot informed the controllers, noting that the impact took place at an altitude of approximately 200 feet (61 meters).
The pilot additionally stated:
“We’re just hoping it was merely a mortar that detonated below, but we certainly felt a significant explosion.”
Recordings indicated that air traffic controllers had alerted the flight crew regarding fireworks being ignited near the airport approach path prior to the aircraft’s descent.
“Delta 1076… exercise caution, as there are several residences near the approach end launching fireworks,” an air traffic controller said.
The controller noted that authorities had already received multiple complaints regarding the activity.
“There have been several reports of fireworks complaints, as you can imagine.” The city is informed. They mentioned that they would inform the Chicago police, but honestly, I’m uncertain about their actions.
The Chicago Police Department informed the BBC that the aircraft “was struck by an unknown object,” leading to “minor paint damage.”
Delta stated that a post-flight inspection of the Airbus A319 revealed no damage that compromised the aircraft’s safety.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the incident took place around 8:30 p.m. CDT and has been communicated to the appropriate aviation authorities.
The BBC reported that it reached out to Chicago city officials concerning allegations of fireworks being set off from residences situated near the airport’s approach path.
Although numerous major Independence Day fireworks displays throughout the United States are coordinated by federal, state, and local authorities, privately organized fireworks—frequently without supervision—are still prevalent in residential neighborhoods.
In Washington, D.C., the nation’s 250th anniversary was celebrated with a spectacular 40-minute fireworks display organized by the National Park Service at the National Mall. To facilitate the celebrations, flights at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were halted from midday on Saturday to permit military flyovers and the extensive pyrotechnic display.
